Official: Former Puerto Rico governor Wanda Vázquez arrested on corruption charges

Wanda Vázquez was arrested Thursday on bribery charges related to the financing of her 2020 campaign, marking the first time that a former leader of the island faces federal charges.

Wanda Vázquez Garced has been sworn in as the territory's third governor in a week after the island's Supreme Court invalidated her predecessor's appointment.

Two other unidentified people were arrested along with her, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk about the federal case.

Vázquez was sworn in as governor in August 2019 following a local Supreme Court ruling after former Gov. Ricardo Rosselló stepped down following massive protests. She served until 2021.
